My chosen theme is texture, My starting point will be to research photographers who have captured texture. I have chosen the theme texture as there are many different varieties of texture for me to look at, as we have texture all around us. For this project I will need a cannon camera or a mobile phone camera to use.
In texture there are many photographers to research, From what I have looked at so far most of them focus on how the object is placed and how the light and background are used in order to capture the image professionally. For example the details inside a pepper can be seen clearly when placed a certain way, also you can capture details that people do not usually capture like an apple having wrinkles or being really smooth. I am going to start my first shoot by using fruits vegetables and flowers as I feel this will increase my knowledge on how to use a camera for close ups and maybe use a macro lens as I feel this will give me a good response on texture to begin with.
The research I will intend to carry out will be to look at the following photographers; Roe Etheridge, Edward Weston and Lucy Shires. The first photographer will be Edward Weston. Edward Weston was most known for his sharply focused images of natural landscapes. I have chosen to research Edward Weston because his work is based on natural objects such as Shells, Trees and fruits. Using natural objects I feel will increase my skills as they contain a lot of texture and are different shapes. The second photographer I will choose to study is Roe Etheridge. Roe was known for exploring natural fruits and vegetable which contain a lot of colour and texture.
I will explore different way on how to take pictures of still life set ups by using fruits and vegetables to begin with . I will experiment with my camera setting by using different F-stops and I will control the aperture as I will be using my camera on manual.I feel I will gain more knowledge on how to use my camera correct my creating a studio set up of a still life.
Due to Covid I am limited as to where I will be able to capture my personal response to the them texture. Hopefully when Covid-19 rates go down I will be able to go to different locations where man made texture is being provided in a unique way. I will use the influence of the photographers I have researched to help with my first shoots. I will also experiment by taking pictures with different white balance shades too to see what effect is given. I will then refine my work and use other natural and man made objects in future shoots..
I will be begin my research using photographers I have found inspiring and who work with man made and natural textures. Some that caught my attention is Roe Etheridge and Edward Weston. These photographers work with all types of textures and use differnt ISO settings. In order to do well I will use there ideas and techniques in my work.
I will use the
camera Canon 600D/700D
Camera features Tripod, bigger lense
Lighting Natural light, Flash.
I will manipulate my photographs using Photoshop and Photo Pea as this will allow me to change the lighting, colours and effects and enhance the images that I have already captured.
In this project I hope to learn more about what techniques photographers use to get there photographs to look professional. I would also like to learn how to turn my pictures black and white with specific features still in colour making certain detail stand out.I would also like to learn how to use Photoshop more confidently.
I see my personal response to the theme texture to be displayed as a gallery of my final images. I will refine my work through out the project by using the method of selecting and comparing my best and my worst from my shoots. This will show how I have improved from when I took my first set of images. Doing this will help me look at ways in which to improve my work and allow me to aim for a higher grade .

Edward Weston photography analysis
Context
This is a picture took by Edward Weston and was made in 1927. This photograph was made for a series of photography. Edward Weston was born on March 24, he spent a lot of his time childhood in Chicago. He began photographing at the age of 16 after receiving a bulls eye camera from his dad. Westons first photographs was was captured in a park in Chicago and his aunts farm. Edward went to the Illinois College of Photography in Effingham. He completed the 12 month in six months and returned back to California. Weston also had 4 children in 1911 Weston opened his first own still life studio in Tropico California. This would be his base of operation for the next 2 decades. Edward became successful working in soft focus, winning many salons and professional awards. In 1923 Edward Weston moved to Mexico where he opened a photographic studio with his apprentice and lover. https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-5827333
''Edward Weston made this print in 1927 on velvety matte-surface paper, mounted it on a large buff-colored card, signed and dated it in pencil in the lower right corner of the mount as was his preferred method at that time. On the reverse of the mount he wrote: ‘To Clay and Margaret from Edward-’ It was a gift to Henry Clay Seaman, Jr. and his wife Margaret. Clay was the brother of Weston’s dear sister Mary’s husband, John Seaman. The print has remained in the family to the present. Having spent decades tucked away in a drawer it has never before been exhibited to the public.''

This is a picture of a shell. It is clearly taken in a studio as there is a black background which is giving it a dramatic look. This picture is classed as a still life and is a realistic picture. No parts have been distorted because it’s a whole shell. The shell looks like it has been sliced in half and we can see the interlocking shell in half. There is a variety of shades of grey such as light grey to dark grey. This gives an Ombre look and makes the picture look more life like. There is a frame outside of the shell which is a pale tone but moves darker as you look around it. Furthermore, In this image I can see the shell having patterns on top of it constantly rotating. In addition the Ombre frame creates a more opposing image throughout the photograph. There is more emphasis on the outers shell as it is one stainable photograph . This shell accentuates as you move away from the middle.
Composition
The shells spiral naturally has leading lines as your eye follows the shape to the center. The patterns have an Ombre look because of the different shades inside them. The shell is white and the background is black creating dramatic contrasting tones. There is an natural frame of grey around the image. This person may have used a tripod because the image is a birds eye view. Due to when this was made the camera was old which would have been used to film leaving shades of grey at the back. The printing paper has a velvety matte surface. Edward published his picture in Glendale, California his studio. I am going to guess he has used a F-stop which is around the middle such as F/11. This photograph of the shell gives off an elderly look which could mean it was taken on a very old camera or taken a very long time ago as it contains every detail but is a little blurry.
Connection
I like his work because it makes real images have a actual effect and meaning to it. Weston uses a few fstops to create a vintage image which gives it a full effect this means he has used different camera settings. His work links towards mine because the colour is the same ,the strengths in this picture is that he has used a different background which makes the image better, however the negative thing about this image is that the thing he places the shell on isn’t as good. On the other hand the shell looks very textile as it has different patterns and shapes throughout the image.
Comment
My opinion of the image is that he has used different lighting which is really good and I would use that in my next shoot by finding a good place ,lighting and background. Doing that will increase my knowledge on how to structure my work and use a camera with different features. This will improve my grade and skills. I could explore the texture by cutting open fruits and vegetables to see how unique the features are. I could also go to another location such as a flower garden to have a look at different patterns and take sophisticated photographs.

Roe Ethridge Analysis
Content
This picture is a Roe Ethridge picture it is describing an apple with two cut up pieces at the front and wasps on them. This photo is realistic which means it isn't fake. Pieces have been distorted because Roe Ethridge wanted to make it look more interesting. The colors that are being used are yellow, green and black. The foliage at the back is what makes it look realistic also this picture is trying to say that you shouldn't waste food because the wasps aren't gonna be able to eat it all. This piece of work is called " C'est pas du laxe". Which means to have too much, so much that it is waisted. In this photograph there is a natural fruit which is cut out being used. This fruit isn't as rare as many people eat it. In the background there is green plants reflecting themselves. One of the Apples has not been touched whereas the other one has been cut open in bits. The Apples are a Bright red colour with green overtones contrasting both the colours together. The photograph goes from blurry to completely clear. The apples look very juicy as it looks like loads of the wasps are enjoying it. The wasps are a bright yellow and white colour which could mean they are healthy.
Context
This was made for an audience which is us and tells us why food shouldn't be waisted and we should be more careful. Roe Ethridge is known for exploring the plastic nature of photography. He was born in America in 1969.Ethridge creates images that are intimate, captivating, gleaming and invigorating. This work relates to the other art at the time because they used realistic pictures to. By using realistic objects you will have some knowledge on how the object is structured. Telling us that food shouldn't be gives us a lesson as many people out in the world and we should be grateful with what we have. This image has a meaning behind it which could mean Roe Ethridge tries to make his pictures persuasive. Getting people to improve on eating would mean them not wasting food and food being thrown away. This photographer cares about waistage. This could be because he might have gone through something personal. Which is making him change other peoples lives. I think Roe is also trying to tell us that jus get the amount of food u will eat.
Composition
Symmetry has been used because the table is right in the center of the photo. My eyes have been led on the apple and wasp because it gives a big meaning. The lighting is bright which makes the picture clearer to see. This is natural lighting. The camera is set up in manual mode which he could have experimented with his ISO F-stop and white balance. is going to travel more faster and clearer. This photograph might have been set out in natural light as it is easier to see wasps come out. This is so you can get the perfect shot and clear image. The use of symmetry means the photographer has taken the picture right opposite the table. The able is getting reflected which could mean this was a studio shoot. A studio shoot with natural objects is very creative with texture as u have the same shape reflecting you.
Connection
This connects to my photoshoot because realistic pictures are being used. The colour that is being used is natural which means its not much of a studio light. The way I could frame my pictures is by having a good background position and making it a complex with unique colours. Using unique colours will improve the way my photographs will be set. Having a good background will really take a big affect on my work as it will increase my grade and give me more skills using bright colours. By doing this I can also increase the way I set my stuff out such as symmetry or rule of thirds all of this by using patterns.
Comment
I think this piece of photography is helpful because it gives me ideas of how I can do my work .This photographer also puts a lot of compaction into his work which persuades me to do better. The way I can use this in my future shoots is by placing my object in a more vibrant sophisticated place such as the park, accessories at home e.c.t. This piece of work will extremely help me as I can use a picture which has a meaning behind it. This will make the audience viewing my picture question how i came up and other people can look back to my work to.

The iso i will need to use is 1600 to give it a fast cleaner look
Which compositional rules will I use?
The competition rules i will use are lines of symmetry for a precise look just like Roe etheridge has. I will try place things im sunlight to give them some light and a shadow, With this technique my pictures will come out just as distinctive as Roe Etheridges
Plan
These are pictures that are took by Andy Small ,To get pictures like this I need to go outside and get colored things such as flowers and bright fruit for the backdrop I need to get a colored background which would make the picture turn out brighter. The aperture I need is f:16 which means its a close up.This means the pictures Andy took are really Shocking and standing in the crowd because there really bright. The texture he has put in these pictures are really smooth also use a light to give the objects a shine.

Outdoor shoots- texture
Description of aims for shoot:
The type of pictures I am aiming to take are as shown. The photographer I used for inspiration is Lucy Shires. Lucy uses a variety of options for lighting during her shoots which I usually aim to do as shown in my outdoor shoots.
Links with Photographers
Lucy Shires photos are going to be linked to mine because she is into shapes and does close ups which make her pictures seem extremely graceful. In addition Lucy Shires captures Textured objects which could be either inside or outside, E.g wooden fence, tilles, chairs , fur jacket and many more.
Location:
Props/ items needed:
Kit needed e.g. lighting, tripod, backdrop, macro lens:
I would need to be outside often
No props needed, I will looks for man made textures indoors and outdoors.
Good lighting ,different coloured backdrop
To go further in i could use a microlense to zoom into more textured things
E.g Flowers fruit or vegetables.
Camera settings I will use:
F-Stop :
White Balance:
Shutter speed:
ISO:
The f-stop I would be working with is a small fstop f 5.6 makes pictures more outer focus
The type of white balance I will be using often is shadow and daylight
shutter speed would be fast
iso 100 to make it darker
Which compositional rules will I use?
The compositional rules i will use are leading lines to help keep focus on the object or person. I will use close ups and look for vibrant colours like Lucy shires. I will try place things in a triangle shape which are also low for a worms eye view following the rule of thirds to make my photographs aesthetically pleasing.

Man made Texture
Homework
I have chosen this image because brushes in the middle ground are in focus and are sharp. Compared to the background which is out of focus. There is a line symmetry because it is getting reflected by a mirror, also the white balance is high at the back however at the front its low which means it has a lighter shade. The thing that stands out the most is the brushes because it is getting reflected by the mirror. Another way I can describe this is there is the rule of thirds with the brush set at the front and glass and pot at the back.
Final shoots
Furniture
Texture
Trees
Flowers
This is my best photograph because it has a contrast of green and cream which makes my pictures look tranquil. This picture gives my website a gentle look which means the person looking through would have a positive mindset. The green smooth leaves at the back give the picture a unwrinkled disparity. My camera settings isn't high because the blurriness wont be equal and wont have a nice combination. If the pictures don't have a equal blurriness the pictures would look repulsive and off putting.
|
This is my least favorite picture because the angle is not presented well. To make my picture decent and stand out I should have used a worms eye view. A worms eye view would give my pictures a ultimate appealing look this could lead to then picture coming out more decent. Another thing i dont like about this picture is the lighting. To improve i would need to have golden lighting for a bright look whereas if i was goign for a dull look i would need to try take a picture in the shade or darker lighting. .

This is my best picture because it contains a higher f stop which makes the image extremely vague this means the image comes out more valuable affected and artificial. The zoom in on the strawberry's exfoliates the picture even more leaving the shot breath taking. This shot shows lush berry's and a strong green fence. The fence on this picture turn out extremely strong as it is an exceptionally dark colour.
|
On the other hand this is my worst picture because it contains 1 flower which is extremely out of focus and has no patterns this makes the picture turn out exceptionally substandard. This makes the person who is viewing the shot more delighted. The camera settings that did not co operate where brightness as the brightness decreases towards the flower. The blurred images at the back are giving the picture unappetizing creations whereas in my best picture the blurred affects give the picture an exiting view.
